Speaking of traditional deathmatch, you still get that by playing the game’s Blast mode, which is a 10 vs. Since only a target’s death is counted as a kill, it adds an extra layer of strategy to the mode that you don’t get from a straight-up deathmatch. Villains, which pits a small group of popular characters from Star Wars lore against each other while marking one character as a target to either take down or protect. In addition to picking between different classes, you can also rack up in-match points that you can use to summon vehicles and more powerful soldiers as well as turn into powerful figures such as Rey or Kylo Ren to mow down your foes. Classes comprise of the Assault class, a basic infantry unit that specializes in medium to short-range the Heavy class, which can summon shields and heavy blasters the sniper-style Specialist and the more technical Officer class, which can summon turrets and buff allies. The mode splits a total of 40 players into two different camps - one group attacking and another defending - and play out battles based on popular Star Wars scenes and locations.

Galactic Conquest, which takes a page from Battlefield, is easily my favorite multiplayer mode thanks to its large scale and addition of separate objectives between opposing groups. It’s a nice complement to the series’ traditional shooting, which returns with a few tweaks on its solid foundation. The inclusion of space battles via Starfighter Assault also addresses one of two key omissions from the previous game and helps further round out the overall Star Wars experience. That includes a fair number of starfighters crashing into Star Destroyers and other giant objects, just like they do in the movies.

Once you get the hang of the controls and mechanics, however, the game does a good job in recreating the chaos of Star Wars skirmishes in space. The presence of invisible borders, meanwhile, rein in the sense of scale while also breaking immersion. Admittedly, it takes a while to get used to the flight controls. Space battles, for example, feel like an expansive and chaotic mess - in a good way - as I found myself desperately tracking and shooting down foes before they take down allied ships while also avoiding an assortment of debris, structures and ginormous cruisers that can turn my TIE Fighter or X-Wing into the space version of a bug on a windshield. Overall, however, I loved the game’s visuals, which not just capture the retro-future look of Star Wars but also serve as a grand canvas to the large-scale spectacles that the movies are known for. Granted, some character faces have uncanny valley moments to them. From its character designs and locales to its special effects and familiar soundtrack, Battlefront 2 succeeds in delivering the sights and the sounds of its source material. At the top of the list are its production values, which do an excellent job in nailing the look and feel of Star Wars. To be fair, the game actually does several things well. For a game that touted the addition of a much-anticipated narrative, it’s ironic that the biggest drama it generated came outside of its campaign. Battlefront 2 essentially turned into Anakin Skywalker.Įven as publisher EA scrapped its controversial loot box system just before launch, the fact that those mechanics were considered and worked on in the first place continue to leave a scarlet letter on Battlefront 2.

Thanks to an initial decision to tie crucial parts of the gameplay to loot boxes that could also be paid for with real cash, the supposed savior of the series ended up as the poster child for what’s wrong in gaming today - at least in the eyes of gamers who detest in-your-face microtransactions. Battlefront 2, on the other hand, seemed more, well, sinister. Yes, it was annoying but that’s about as far as its issues went. For all its problems, however, Star Wars Battlefront was akin to a Jar Jar Binks. It was supposed to be the game that corrected the wrongs of its predecessor, which talked a good game but ultimately lacked substance. Battlefront 2 was supposed to be the chosen one.
